We should still make time to celebrate, even in difficult times.
In a weekly column usually published in the Medway Messenger, Churches Together in Medway contributor Pam Tolhurst, Local Church Leader at Gillingham United Reformed Church, writes: "At the beginning of the year, how could we have imagined that we would be where we are on life’s
journey today?
"For some, past weeks have been so so difficult with much sadness. Isolation too has invaded.
"Loneliness has become an unenviable experience. Not being able to see people has been very hard.
"The whole arena of work, school and play has changed. And so I could go on – mindful that for
many the situation remains.
"Looking back over the Christian calendar this year we have journeyed from Good Friday when we
remember Christ’s death for us on the cross, to Easter Sunday when we celebrate His resurrection, to Ascension when He went to heaven.
"On the horizon - Pentecost. Pentecost, Sunday, May 31, is a time of great celebration. It is the birthday of the Church.
"Were we able to be in church to worship on Pentecost Sunday we would have a birthday cake. That is part of our tradition, not possible this year.
"Beyond missing that piece of cake in church, however, comes a great opportunity to celebrate,
wherever we are.
"For the gift of the Holy Spirit to Christ’s followers over 2,000 years ago is our gift today when we are willing to receive Jesus into our lives, by the power of the Holy Spirit.
"When we follow the teachings of Jesus and work together to build the Church of Jesus Christ, we thank God that it is the Holy Spirit uniting us and filling us with the willingness and confidence to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.
"In these days of pandemic God understands that many people are afraid, scared, isolated, lonely, overwhelmed.
"Maybe that includes you. Maybe you are finding it difficult to hold on to knowing that God is with you.
"Christian faith equips us to believe that God never leaves us. As the Holy Spirit came on that first Pentecost, so the Holy Spirit comes today.
"Let the Holy Spirit come into your life. Accept Christ’s invitation to come to Him. Receive from God. Know His peace, His love, His power – and celebrate!
