Hundreds of friends and family members released balloons to mark the first anniversary of young dad Michael Tierney’s murder.
The 33-year-old, also known as Mikey, suffered severe head injuries after he was attacked near his home in Chatham on June 16 last year and died in a London hospital two days later.
His death sparked a wave of grief from across the community, including a large Irish contingent, and balloons in the Irish colours of orange, green and white were released from St Margaret’s Cemetery, Rochester, where he is buried.
Mourners then gathered in The George, City Way, on Saturday to raise a glass to the popular dad-of-one.
An online memorial page, joined by more than 2,000 members, has been flooded with tributes from friends and relatives.
Mr Tierney’s cousin, Paul Tierney, posted in the group: “You’re in our thoughts and in our hearts. God bless you cuz."
Friend Soraya Jenkins said: “Love you Mikey I have your Irish music on. I know you’re smiling down on us all in heaven, you are so missed in all our hearts you beautiful soul.”
Paul Marraner posted: “One year later so many of us are still filled with sadness and pain and your family are still doing fantastic with their broken hearts.
"They are doing an amazing job mate, I bet you’re so proud. Medway still hasn’t replaced a character like you and NEVER will.”
Emma Agius said: “Thinking of you all. Wow, a year has gone by but the pain still feels just the same.
George French, 39, of Ansell Avenue, Chatham, was convicted of Mr Tierney’s murder in December and is currently serving a life sentence.
French’s cousin, William Fleming, 27, of White Road, Chatham, was found guilty of manslaughter. He was jailed for 12 years and must serve an extra three years on licence.
