A Medway woman has been arrested on suspicion of defrauding people by allegedly posing as a door-to-door charity collector.
Police say they were called on Monday morning after concerns were raised about a woman who had appearently been asking people for money and acting suspiciously in Pembury Way, Rainham.
Officers were called out at 10.34am and arrested an 18-year-old Strood woman on suspicion of fraud by false representation.
She has since been released from custody pending further inquiries.
The incident has prompted officers to issue some advice on people answering their doors to strangers.
A spokesman for Kent Police said: “Most people who call at your home will be genuine but some may try to trick their way inside to steal your valuables and money.
“Here are some top tips to protect yourself. Lock your back doors and windows before answering the front door as thieves often work in pairs.
“Use your spyhole and chain and ask who they are through the door first. Check their identification, even if they have a pre-arranged appointment.
“If you are not expecting them and they do not have any ID, do not let them in. If you need to get something, close the door until you return.
“If in doubt, ask them to leave and come back at a more convenient time when a family member or friend can be with you.”
