A woman was pulled from her car just moments before it burst into flames after crashing on a road on the Hoo Peninsula.

The crash happened at about 11.30pm last night on Peninsula Way, just off Four Elms Hill, near Chattenden, and the smash was spotted by a passerby who bravely pulled the injured woman from the car moments before the blaze took hold.

Firefighters from Strood were called out to the scene and spent about 45 minutes putting out the flames and giving first aid to the woman, who is thought to have suffered abdomen, chest and neck injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.

The road was closed by police while firefighters dealt with the incident and the woman’s car, a silver Volkswagen Golf, was completely destroyed by the blaze.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The car had crashed into a road sign, but luckily a man had spotted it and stopped and managed to pull the woman out of the car before the flames took hold.

"We gave the woman some first aid before paramedics arrived and took her to hospital."
