A woman fighting for her life after the car she was travelling in crashed into a barrier has been transferred to a London hospital.

The accident happened in Corporation Street, Rochester, at 6am, on Saturday.

It is thought the green Honda Civic was travelling towards Chatham when it spun out of control and hit the height barrier at the entrance to the Corporation Street public car park.

No other vehicles were involved.

There were five people in the car; three men and two women.

A spokesman for Kent Police said the group was on its way home after working a night shift.

One of the women was thrown from the back seat into the front windscreen. She suffered serious head injuries and injuries to her arms and legs.

The other woman, who was in the front passenger seat, sustained serious chest, neck and back injuries.

One of the men suffered a back injury, and the two remaining men also sustained minor injuries.

All five were described as in their early 20s and of Eastern European origin.

Two crews from Kent Fire and Rescue Service, Kent Police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service were on the scene.

The road was shut while the emergency services dealt with the incident and remained closed until 2.30pm while Kent Police's serious collison investigation unit carried out further inquiries.

The driver and four passengers were all taken to Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham. The three men have since been discharged.

One of the women remains in a critical condition and has been transferred to a London hospital.

The other woman is still in a serious condition at Medway Maritime.

Police said the driver was breathalysed - a normal procedure after accidents - and no further action was being taken.
