A pet charity that cares for hundreds of animals across Medway has made an urgent appeal for donations to its shop in Chatham.

Contributions to stores across the South East have dropped dramatically this year leaving a massive shortfall in the PDSA charity’s income.

Jennifer Whitelock, manager of the High Street shop, said : “I have been here 10 years and this is the worst it has ever been.

“It’s down to the economic climate. People are holding on to their clothes longer and selling them on eBay and at boot fairs to make some money.

“In the worst possible scenario I can see shops being forced to close, which is a terrible shame for animal lovers.”

Miss Whitelock said they were in particular need of warm clothing and menswear and urged people to have a rummage through their wardrobes for unwanted items.

Items can be dropped off at the shop at 295 High Street between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday. There is a limited free collection service.

Area retail manager Dave Russell said: “We care for more than 2,000 pets a year in the area and our charity stores help raise vital income to ensure our vets and nurses can provide that service.

“The drop in donations we have seen has had real impact, as we only have around half the stock we ideally want. So I’m urging animal lovers to have a rummage through their wardrobes and donate to the PDSA.”
