The Gillingham captain for the forthcoming season remains undecided, says manager Mark Bonner.
Max Ehmer’s been wearing the captain’s armband whenever he’s started in pre-season but no decision has been made.
Ehmer wore the armband for much of last season as club captain Shaun Williams wasn’t involved much following Neil Harris’ sacking.
Tim Dieng and Conor Masterson have been among those who have also taken the armband this summer.
Asked if a decision had been made, Bonner said: “No. I have not spoken to one player once about any captaincy.
“It has just been passed around a few times. Max has worn it, he wore it last season, but that will be something I talk to them about in a week or so.
“I am enjoying learning about them, seeing how they respond on match days, how they cope around the place and I’m learning the characters a bit and seeing who the natural leaders in the team are.
“In the next week or so I will have a conversation with a few of them about it.”
Bonner spoke about his criteria for a captain and he said: “You have to be good first haven’t you? You have to be likely to play.
“Experience can help, a voice can help, but I am not sure there is one particular type of captain I like.
“There are lots of different ways you can lead. Some people are excellent leaders and don’t need the armband.
“Sometimes I think the captaincy is overrated and other times it is really important but in the end we need more personality, more leaders, more voices in the team because than we will be able to play with the personality I want us to.”
