Ady Pennock’s short reign as Gills manager is over.

He left Gillingham by mutual consent on Monday morning, following the 3-0 defeat at Rochdale on Saturday.

Pennock won only one of his first nine league games in charge this season - 1-0 at home to Charlton - and departs with the Gills sitting 22nd in League 1.

Fans have voiced their discontent at performances in recent weeks and Mr Scally has also now decided Pennock’s time is up.

Pennock was a popular figure as a player, captaining the Gills to play-off glory at Wembley, but had few highlights as manager.

He leaves the Priestfield hot-seat with a record of six wins from 32 games in charge, a win percentage of just 18.75%.

He was handed the role of head coach back in January, following Justin Edinburgh’s sacking. A charge for the play-offs was talked about on his appointment, but behind the scenes there one only one mission, to avoid relegation.

Pennock made plenty of controversial changes, taking the captaincy off popular midfielder Josh Wright and letting loan striker Jay Emmanuel-Thomas return to QPR.

The Gills continued their slide down the table and only just avoided relegation, on the final day, after a goalless draw against Edinburgh’s Northampton Town.

At the end of the season Pennock revealed some of the dramas that he was dealing with while trying to keep the Gills up, but he was still up against it from the start of the season, after Mr Scally gave him the nod to continue. Fans remained sceptical.

With one of the lowest budgets in the division, Pennock had to assemble a new-look team that would ensure there was no more relegation concern during the current campaign, but he failed.

Pennock’s decision to release player-of-the-year Wright was also unpopular among many fans, who also felt goalkeeper Stuart Nelson had been hard done by after being relegated to third choice.

The Gills struggled for goals at the start of the season, something many feared, with the loss of both McDonald and Bradley Dack in the summer.

With just six points from their first nine games, the Gills are already facing a season of relegation worry, something Mr Scally had openly expressed that he didn’t want to see again.

The news was first revealed by KentOnline and later confirmed in a club statement posted on Gillingham's website.

The club said: "Ady Pennock has left Gillingham Football Club by mutual consent.

"The Head Coach, along with Jamie Day, have both left their roles at MEMS Priestfield Stadium.

"The club would like to thank both Ady and Jamie for their services and we wish them well for the future."

Gills are at home to Scunthorpe on Tuesday night.
