Promising young defender Baily Cargill has joined the Gills on loan from Bournemouth.

The 21-year-old 6ft 2inch centre-half, who can also play left-back, has represented England at under-20 level.

He has yet to make his league debut for the Cherries but has been involved in the club's FA Cup and League Cup matches for the last two seasons.

The defender joins on loan until January.

Cargill turned pro with Premier League Bournemouth and has had several loan spells, including a stint with Kent non-league side Welling United. He played 13 games for the Wings.

He also had a loan spell at Torquay, mainly playing at left-back.

Last season he played five league matches during a loan spell with Coventry City. All of Cargill’s 10 appearances for Bournemouth have been in cup competitions.

He goes straight into the Gills squad for their televised League 1 match against Sheffield United on Sunday.

Gills boss Justin Edinburgh was also hoping to add another striker to his ranks but has so far not been able to get anyone in. He said on Tuesday night he was unlikely to get a deal done.

Meanwhile there has not yet been any word from Priestfield about the future of Bradley Dack, who has been linked with a handful of clubs. The transfer window closes at 11pm.
