Gillingham were booed off the pitch at the weekend and boss Steve Lovell knows how they felt.

Lovell’s side failed to get to grips with non-league Hartlepool in a goalless FA Cup first round tie.

There were only just over 2,000 Gills fans in attendance and many of those made their feelings known.

Lovell said: “I don’t think they got to see an entertaining game.

“They have their moans and their groans and they are entitled to it but they are only doing the same moaning and groaning that I am doing.

“I can understand how they are feeling. We don’t want it to happen as much as they don’t want it to happen.

“We have got to make sure we work on it. There isn’t much to work on but sometimes you have to give credit to the teams you play against and what they do.

"They stopped us creating chances at goal and they did it well, give them credit.”

Gillingham’s crowd of 2,224 for Saturday’s game is the lowest of the season but less are likely to attend Tuesday's Checkatrade Trophy game against Crawley on Tuesday.

The weekend attendance is lower than the 3,178 that turned up for the FA Cup home game against Carlisle last season.

Crowds at Priestfield have dropped in recent seasons and the club have yet to issue an official figure for the home game against Fleetwood last weekend. The crowd against Blackpool on Tuesday was given as 4,055.
