Gillingham have one of last season’s youth players signed up professionally but are still waiting on another.
Bailey Akehurst returned from his summer holiday to put pen to paper on his first pro contract, having impressed manager Neil Harris in the brief time he was fit enough to play. But Josh Chambers has not yet signed his.
Chambers was unfancied by previous first-team manager Steve Evans but current boss Harris liked what the midfielder had to offer and immediately involved him with the first-team last season, naming him in the squad on 11 occasions.
A senior team debut for the teenager came at Doncaster Rovers before he was handed a first start at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland, in front of more than 31,000 fans.
Harris sees plenty of potential in the player but said: “Josh has had an offer from the club, a very good offer, from me personally to stay with us.
“I gave him his (full) debut at Sunderland last year and I think highly of Josh, he has not committed to his contract yet, talks are ongoing at the moment.
“I would like to see Josh Chambers commit his future to the football club because of the time and effort I have spent with him over the last four months but at the moment talks are still progressing.”
