Carlisle defender James Brown is no stranger to Priestfield.

The Dover-born right-back, on loan with the Cumbrians from Millwall, was once on the books of Gillingham as a junior.

He was in the stands watching as a kid, alongside his dad, when Dover knocked the Gills out of the FA Cup back in 2010.

The 19-year-old will be out to make it another painful day for the Gills this weekend when League 2 Carlisle make the trip south for a second round tie.

His father said: “He’ll be hoping to help create an upset on his return this weekend.

“He’s on loan from Millwall and that move has been great for James because off the back of that they have offered him an extended deal.

“The move has given him the chance to prove himself and it’s going well so far.”

Brown – a former Dover Grammar School pupil – has made 16 appearances for Carlisle this season, including a first appearance in the FA Cup, helping his side to a 3-2 victory over League 1 Oldham in round one.

Because of the travelling, that was the first visit to Brunton Park for the family.

“It was great to be able to go and watch him on his FA Cup debut,” said his dad.

“He’s got a bit of pace and I’m hoping he gets a few goals at the weekend.”

Brown was released by the Gills at a young age but moved to Millwall after being spotted playing for the county, signing his first pro deal in the summer of 2016.

That deal was extended until at least the summer of 2020 earlier this month.

Speaking after signing the extension, he said: “It’s great to have that security and now it’s just about focusing on my football.

“I have been able to learn a lot during my loan spell at Carlisle.

“Playing regular first-team football has been the main thing for me and playing in front of fans.”
