Chatham Town Women were heading for second place in the table before their game at London Seaward was abandoned.

Victory would have propelled Keith Boanas’ side up the National League Division 1 South East standings and they were looking good for a comfortable win - going 2-0 up before an injury to a home player led to the game being stopped.

It’s now over to the FA to decide what happens to the match which was halted before half-time.

Central defender Beatrice Rogers’ collision with the perimeter wall at the East London side’s home ground led to an ambulance being called.

London coach Joey Soyebo described the injury coming as a result of “a late challenge”, something Chatham have disputed, video footage suggesting she had tripped. The home side supported the decision to have the game abandoned.

It was a frustrating end to the afternoon for Chatham, who had gone into the match four unbeaten in the league and on course to make it five.

Boanas said: “We actually didn't start well but still went two up with goals that were well-worked down the right-hand side. We were growing into it.

“It had been a bit of a shaky start but we had changed a couple of players, we gave a couple of players their first games this season.

“It seemed that we were a little bit out of whack but we still didn't look threatened and managed to work the two goals well and I think we were getting better and better as the game was going on.

“We could have gone into second spot on Sunday had we carried on and won it the way I thought we would have.”

Chats had lost to Actonians in the FAWNL Plate competition in their previous match but had drawn two and won two of their previous four games in he league.

Boanas said: “I was really disappointed disappointed with the two draws against Bedford and QPR draw but we didn't lose.

“The cup game against Actonians was similar to the league game (also a 1-0 loss) where we dominated the game but they counter-attacked from our corner, nicked the goal and then parked the bus.

“I was really disappointed to go out of the competition because I felt we could have gone all the way in that.”

Chatham are back home at the Bauvill Stadium this Sunday in the FA Women’s Cup (2pm) against lower-league opposition when they face Horsham.

Their weekend visitors play in the Sussex County League Premier Division and Boanas plans to rotate some of his players for the match.

“It’s a game we should win and it gives me an opportunity to rotate some of our players,” he said.

“We have a very good squad and I am trying to give everyone minutes without unbalancing the side. There is fierce competition and I keep reminding them of that.

“If they are making the game-day squad now they are achieving something because it is tough to get into that squad but it has to be that way if we are going to achieve anything this season.

“Their attitude has been superb, their camaraderie has been superb, their togetherness has been really, really good and I want it to stay that way.

“But there's obviously come a time where one or two are feeling frustrated and if they're not getting playing time, they're probably going to come and ask me what's going on. I'll deal with that as the time comes.”

Chatham will be big favourites this weekend, whichever team the manager puts out.

He said: “It’s the FA Cup and we’re realistic. It's unlikely we're going to get all the way to Wembley, but the further we go in the competition, there's obviously huge benefits to that. The prize money's much better now. It builds momentum.

“We'll be going into Sunday's game absolutely wanting to get into the next round for the reason of carrying on momentum and it being the FA Cup and the financial assistance it gives us at this level.

“To them, we'll be a daunting prospect, but also a big scalp. It's a good club, the same level club as Chatham on the men's side of it and we know they've got a really good set-up over there and I think they're being quite well supported.

“Certainly we'll not even consider taking it for granted and we’ll make sure that the players don't either.”
