Gillingham assistant boss David Kerslake was elated to get a point at Chesterfield but knew the team should have done better.

The Gills trailed 2-0 and 3-1 but fought back to level the match with almost the last kick of the game.

Kerslake said: "It's a feeling of elation. We’re 3-1 down and as much as we were putting pressure on I wasn’t sure if we would get the goals.

"But it is a trait we have been used to this season, it’s a never-say-die attitude, they’ve kept going and got what they deserved."

The Gills were a goal down after just a minute as they failed to clear from a set-piece. The hosts doubled the lead from the penalty spot early in the second half.

Kerslake said: "We knew they were decent at set-pieces and the ball was always going to come in quickly. We have got set up but unfortunately they haven’t gone with their marker, he has got across and they have taken an early lead.

"To concede an early first and then early in the second half is something we will work on all week this week."

Gillingham kept themselves in the hunt thanks to two penalties that were scored by Jay Emmanuel Thomas.

The ice-cool striker slotted both home with a minimal amount of fuss.

Kerslake said: "He has a way of frightening the life out of you when he goes up to take them but he is an exceptionally confident young man and has put them away nicely."
