Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh impressed by the shape striker Cody McDonald is in as pre-season gets under way

Cody McDonald’s hunger hasn’t gone unnoticed by Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh.

Last season’s leading scorer has new competition this season following the arrival of strikers Rory Donnelly and Ben Williamson.

Both players, along with Luke Norris, will be challenging McDonald for a place upfront at the Gills.

McDonald took just four minutes to open his account this summer, heading home the second goal in Gillingham’s 3-0 win over Folkestone Invicta on Tuesday night, early in the second half.

“He has come back in good condition,” said Gills boss Edinburgh. “He’s certainly worked hard over the summer. He looks fit and hungry and I was pleased with Cody’s performance.

“It was a brave goal but that’s Cody for you. He’s a goalscorer and I am sure he is pleased to get off the mark. It was a good goal.”

Edinburgh is still chasing defensive signatures but places are up for grabs across all areas.

“There is competition everywhere on the pitch,” said the Gills boss.

“That will be added to with the players we hope to bring in to increase competition. Pretty much all over the park there is fierce competition.”
