The Shouting Men: Gillingham midfielder Billy Bingham writes exclusively for the KM Group

It’s frustrating to be out injured, especially over the forthcoming festive period, but I’ve had some great support.
I suffered three breaks in total and I ruptured the ligament between my tibia and fibula.
Initially, when I heard that I thought I was properly in trouble. The first day was horrible but it’s all been positive since then.
My leg was still stable, it wasn’t a Djibril Cisse-type injury and that stability should help with the recovery. The injury was a freak accident. It wasn’t a tackle, just someone accidently falling on my leg in training. I was unlucky.
I am progressing well from the operation, which was about a month ago. Hopefully, I will be walking on the air boot by Christmas, that’s the next stage.
I will then have another operation on January 5 to remove a screw. That’s in there to make sure it heals properly. It’s an operation which will speed up the healing and if all goes to plan, I can then kick on a lot more.
I am getting married next June and that was my fiancé’s first question when it happened, ‘will you be all right for the wedding?’
Not ‘how’s your leg?, how’s the pain?, what’s happening?!’ If all goes to plan, I will be walking down the aisle by then. She has been great since the injury, I wouldn’t have been able to do it without her and can’t thank her enough.
Gary (Hemens, the physio) has been great, with the way he has treated me. He has helped out a lot. I can’t speak highly enough of Gaz.
When they did the X-ray on my foot it showed up the large metal plate that was already in there, from when I broke it as a 16-year-old! They were like ‘what’s this?’ I had forgotten all about it. It’s like the Robocop leg!
I get asked quite a lot if I’m related to Billy Bingham (the former Sunderland player and Northern Ireland manager). My grandad used to tell me I was related but I think he was lying, we’re not related.
