Tom Dallas has been told he may need a new elbow if he doesn’t stop boxing.
The heavyweight professional, who also turns out for Lordswood Rugby Club, is recovering from surgery on his left elbow.
He hopes the operation will put an end to a niggling injury that has held him back.
The corrective surgery, which included shaving off some bone growth and relieving a trapped nerve, will last around five to seven years if he continues playing sport.
That news isn’t going to stop him. Dallas is desperate to get back in the ring. He hopes to be fighting again in July and playing rugby before the end of this season.
“I just can’t sit around doing nothing,” said the 30-year-old.
“I had arthritis in the elbow because of all the boxing. They said I would need a new elbow if I carry on as I am but I will probably use it again like before until it goes.
“As soon as I can throw a punch again, I will be back in the ring.
“I have already done some weights but it was a struggle at first.
“It was a bit embarrassing. I am going to give it a couple of weeks before I punch again and realistically it could be July when I get to fight again. I will just see how it goes.
“It will be nice to fight again and even just to do some sparring.
Dallas’ last fight was in last April at Madison Square Garden in New York for the WBO NABO heavyweight title. He was beaten by Charles Martin, the current IBF world champion.
A much-lower key return is likely for Dallas, who admits he still won’t be able to extend his left arm fully, limiting his reach.
He said: “I’m six foot six but have a jab of someone who is six foot two. I’ve just got to get my head down and train hard.
“I don’t care if I get another big fight, it doesn’t matter. I’m not in it for the money and whatever fight it is, I will always be going in there to win and give my all.”
