Medway’s first-half display proved enough for a 31-24 Regional 2 South East win over Reeds Weybridge.

It was one-way traffic in the opening 40 minutes, John Sipawa (2), Jonah Hyde and Pete Cole with the tries, but the tide turned after the break as Reeds made inroads and outscored their hosts 24-3.

Sipawa opened the scoring with two tries early on. Centres Antony Clement and Max Bullock worked together to set up Sipawa for his first, and he scored in the far corner with Harrison Fermor topping things up for 7-0.

Two minutes later Sipawa went over again. This time he picked the ball up at the halfway line and darted through Reeds' defence and the posts. A much easier kick for Fermor gave Medway a 14-point cushion.

Sipawa was involved in the third try, too. Receiving Jordan Stubbington’s pass, Sipawa found flanker Jonah Hyde and he crashed over the line.

The home side secured the bonus point at the end of the half when lock Cole found a gap in the visitors’ defence and made the most of it, getting the ball over the whitewash for a 28-0 advantage.

Reeds started the second half with zeal. Jamie Ford threatened for Medway, but the visitors stopped him getting through - although a Fermor penalty added another three points to the tally.

The away team continued to attack and despite Bullock’s best efforts their persistence paid off for their first try and conversion.

A further boost followed for the Surrey side with a yellow card for Sipawa after a high tackle. Reeds scored their second try shortly afterwards thanks to a strong effort from their forwards and a third and final try followed with Medway down to 14 men to the end.

A final penalty for Reeds brought them to within seven points but they ran out of time to inflict more damage.

Medway, second in the standings, return to action at third-place Beckenham on November 30.
