Securing Cody McDonald to the Gills long-term is one of Justin Edinburgh's top priorities.
The Gills boss is keen for the 14-goal frontman to sign an extended contract.
McDonald has already expressed his wish to stay with the Gills but he is out of contract in the summer and is already free to talk to any interested parties.
“We are keen to secure Cody and that was one of my first thoughts.” said Edinburgh, who joined the Gills a fortnight ago.
“I have had a chat with the chairman and that is something we hope to have some news on a development in the next week, to try and tie Cody down.”
McDonald has been a regular scorer for the Gills since first arriving at the club on a season-long loan in 2010 from Norwich City.
He was credited with 25 goals in his first season and he returned on loan to score four in six starts midway through the 2012/13 season under former boss Martin Allen.
He rejoined on a permanent basis in July 2013 and scored another 17 goals that season. Amid the management changes during this campaign, his goals have continued to flow.
“His record speaks for itself,” said Edinburgh.
“He is proven. I spoke to Cody last week and sometimes a club fits and I think that is here at Gillingham. His goal record here and the affection the fans have for him, I just think the glove fits.
“I am sure he feels the same way and I know that when I spoke to him he said he would love to get something sorted out. Hopefully that will be sooner rather than later.”
McDonald’s record in a Gills shirt stands at 60 goals in 132 appearances.
“Hopefully his form can continue under my reign,” added the Gills boss.
