Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh hailed the character of his side after the 2-2 draw at Preston.

Gills trailed 2-0 at the break on Tuesday night but an improved second-half performance saw Jermaine McGlashan's strike and Leon Legge's injury-time header earn a point against the League 1 high-fliers.

Edinburgh, whose side dropped a place to 13th, said: "The players showed fantastic character to come back from falling two goals behind against a very, very good Preston side. It took all we had to get a point.

"We were disappointed with the first goal. It's come from a goal-kick, although you're up against good players out there, they've got some quality and they punished us.

"To concede the second goal as late as we did, in first-half stoppage time, it was a big blow but credit to the players, they've dug deep and found that resilience and that character to get themselves back in the game."

Edinburgh's half-time message got through and he was thrilled with the quality of Legge's late equaliser from substitute Josh Pritchard's cross.

He added: "I just thought we needed to have a bit more belief in possession again. I feel at times we perhaps underestimate ourselves how good we can be with the ball.

"We showed a better tempo in possession, we were more compact and obviously the injuries to certain Preston players played a part but they went right to the end and got that late equaliser which was a fantastic goal.

"I think you'll go a long way to find a better ball than that at any level. The technique there was fantastic and the finish was sublime. That was a real blow for Preston but a fantastic goal for us."
