Justin Edinburgh is hoping a big crowd turns out to see his first game in charge at Priestfield as the in-form Gills take on promotion-chasing MK Dons.

Edinburgh was appointed manager last weekend and took charge of his first game on Tuesday night, with a 2-1 win at Peterborough.

Walking out with his team on Saturday will be a special moment, says the 45-year-old. “I will be immensely proud and excited,” said the former Tottenham defender.

“Off the back of the result (at Peterborough), we should hopefully have a good crowd in and they will get behind us, which they do at home.

“I saw that (atmosphere) first hand on Saturday and am looking forward to my first game at home.”

His last Football League visit as a player was in August 2000, for Portsmouth in a Division 1 game that ended 1-1 against Andy Hessenthaler’s Gills. The pair will be in the dugout alongside each other this weekend.

“I did OK but I did get a bit of stick,” joked Edinburgh of his past experiences at Priestfield. “You do expect that as an away player though, don’t you? Hopefully, there will be a bit of applause this time.”

The Gills are five unbeaten in League 1 and just four points off the play-off positions.
