Gillingham centre-back John Egan admitted the team were sloppy at Wigan.

Mistakes proved costly, as the Gills threw away a 2-0 lead, and the stand-in skipper hopes those issues will be rectified.

He said: “We were 2-0 up and very comfortable and we had to see the game out. We gave away two goals and at that stage you have to take away a point.

“To concede a goal like that in the last seconds of the game is very disappointing.

“At 2-2 they got bodies into the box, we were weathering the storm, but in the last second the fella gets a free header. We know as a team it’s not good enough and we are very disappointed with the result.

“On another day we would have seen that game out. It is disappointing that we couldn’t and it was very sloppy from all of us to throw away a two-goal lead.

“We just have to try and eradicate the mistakes and bounce back. We will bounce back. We have bounced back already this season after tough defeats and it is a big learning curve for us.

Egan and the Gills are keen to now put the result behind them.

The Irishman said: “The lads were down after the loss but we will train hard and prepare for Doncaster.

“They have been going well lately and will be looking for the win. We will have to be on our A-game if we want to get something out of it.”
