Max Ehmer was included in the player survey to pick Gillingham’s new manager – even though he’s only at Priestfield on loan.

Ehmer revealed there was big support for Justin Edinburgh after chairman Paul Scally decided to consult his squad, a move welcomed by the QPR youngster who is staying at Gills for the rest of the season.

He said: “It was a bit surprising but I think it was good from the chairman that he wanted to listen to the players as well and I think quite a lot of people voted for Justin Edinburgh, so it’s good. I’m looking forward to working with him.

“I hadn’t heard of anything like that before but it’s good, it’s different. He’s got to speak to his players as well and he is a really good chairman.

“Everyone was involved, even the youngsters – the under-18s and under-21s.”

Gills are up to 17th place in League 1 after beating Sheffield United but Ehmer isn’t satisfied. He added: “We know we shouldn’t be where we are and we showed that.

“Unbeaten streaks always help morale. We know we’re a top-12 team. We showed that against Sheffield United, we’ve more than held our own against one of the biggest clubs in League 1."
