Chatham Town Women’s caretaker manager Kevin Hake believes the team are heading in the right direction after taking charge of two games in three days.

Men’s boss and club chairman Hake opted to take over the side while interviews take place to find a permanent manager.

Chatham were beaten 2-1 at home to Plymouth on Saturday, suffering defeat with a last-gasp winner for the visitors, before picking up only their second point of the season with a goalless draw at home to London Bees on Tuesday night.

With some heavy defeats in the opening games of the team’s National League South season, the performances in the past week have been welcomed.

Hake said: “Our recent match against London Bees, as well as Sunday’s game against Plymouth, has to me shown the dedication, passion and resilience of the girls against some difficult circumstances.

“Despite the 2-1 loss against Plymouth it was clear to anyone watching that the girls gave it their all.

“The level of commitment and effort on display was excellent.

“The game against London Bees was no different and we were rewarded with a deserved point on the board.”

Chatham were leading at the break against Plymouth thanks to a goal from Letitia Nicholls scored after just two minutes.

The visitors equalised just before the hour mark and after Chatham had a goal ruled out for offside, Plymouth won it with a 94th-minute goal. Chats almost got it level again in stoppage-time but Argyle hung on.

They followed that up with a quick turnaround to face bottom side London Bees, picking up a valuable point.

Hake said “The league is a tough one and is unforgiving and especially as our pre-season was poor. We are not starting from the same position as other teams as a result but if we keep putting in performances like these, there's no doubt in my mind that the results will soon turn around soon if the hard work continues.”

Chatham are away to Cardiff City this Sunday, a team who are a place above them in the league table, three points better off

Hake added: “We will go into the Cardiff game on Sunday knowing we are in for a tough encounter but a good session and preparation on Thursday (tonight) will give us the best chance of getting something out of the game.”
