Gillingham manager Steve Evans has made his first signing.

Defender Connor Ogilvie has returned to the club on a permanent basis after agreeing a two-year deal.

The 23-year-old was on loan with the Gills last season from Tottenham, who have agreed to release him.

Ogilvie played 37 games for the Gills last season, ending the campaign as a regular in central defence alongside Max Ehmer.

He had previously been played as a left-back but settled well into the central role.

Talks were already underway with Ogilvie before Evans agreed to take over as manager and he was happy to have the former Tottenham player onboard.

Ogilvie's signing was announced on Thursday, after the media press-conference with new boss Evans.

The new manager said: "I am absolutely delighted he has signed. I spoke to one or two people at Tottenham and we liked what we had seen as a player.

"On Sunday, after I accepted the job at Gillingham, I asked if we could make the deal happen and thankfully Connor agreed to it.

"He knows the club, he needs some help, he needs some good players to play with, but if you're not a bad player if you are at Tottenham at his age.

"He wants to improve to get better and I am sure he will enjoy working with us here."

Ogilvie said: "It seemed like a no-brainer for me to come back here."
