Gillingham boss Steve Evans is favourite to take over at League 1 rivals Doncaster - despite being in the job for less than a month.

Evans was appointed Gills manager at the start of this month. He replaced Steve Lovell, who departed Gillingham with two games of last season remaining.

But on Sunday afternoon Evans' price with bookmakers SkyBet had been cut to evens for him to become the new Doncaster manager.

Evans was also favourite with BetVictor, who were offering odds of 5/2 on the Gillingham boss leaving for Rovers.

Doncaster are looking for a new manager after boss Grant McCann quit at the end of last week to join Championship outfit Hull.

Ironically, Gillingham are due to travel to Doncaster on the opening day of the League 1 season after the fixtures for the coming campaign were released on Thursday.

Evans, 56, was in charge of Peterborough in the first half of last season and has also had spells in charge of Leeds, Rotherham, Mansfield and Crawley.

The Gills boss has already started to add to his squad with other additions expected this week. Midfielder Matty Willock joined after leaving Manchester United while goalkeeper Jack Bonham opted for Priestfield after leaving Brentford.

Former Cardiff midfielder Stuart O'Keefe has also made the move to Gills, along with versatile right-back Lee Hodson while Connor Ogilvie has now joined on a permanent basis after previous loan spells from Tottenham.
