Gillingham’s former assistant manager John Schofield has joined the backroom team at Lincoln City.

Schofield has returned to Lincoln to act as coach for their recently appointed manager Chris Moyses.

He left Scunthorpe earlier this season, where he was no.2, after manager Russ Wilcox was sacked.

Schofield led the Imps to the League 2 play-offs in the 2006/07 season, as head coach, but was sacked the following season.

He spent two seasons with the Gills and played a key role in helping them win the League 2 title under manager Martin Allen.

When Allen was sacked, Schofield saw out the remainder of last season, working alongside Peter Taylor. The pair ensured the Gills remained in League 1.

In the summer, Taylor let Schofield go, instead choosing Andy Hessenthaler as his assistant.

*Former Gills player Steve Bruce is among the bookies’ favourites to replace Alan Pardew as manager of Newcastle United while ex-boss Tony Pulis is set to become West Brom's head coach.
