Gillingham are hoping to move quickly when the January transfer window opens and forward players will be top of the agenda.

Young Millwall striker Isaac Olaofe is among those players rumoured to be heading to Priestfield. A deal for the 23-year-old was hoped for in the summer but instead the player stayed at the Championship side, hoping to break into their first team.

Olaofe made a couple of appearances in the league for Millwall in August but nothing since and he’s expected to be leaving in January, with the Gills among those clubs interested.

The quick and powerful front-man had three loan spells with Sutton United, scoring nine goals for them last season in League 2. The season before he hit the net 14 times, helping the club to promotion from the National League.

Crawley Town’s Tom Nichols has also been linked with a move to the Gills.

The 29-year-old is a forward who links up play well and has scored four goals this term but hasn’t featured since playing against the Gills a month ago. It would be a blow for Crawley to lose one of their best players.

Nichols has remained out of the Crawley squad while interest in him has been made.

Earlier this month, Crawley director of football Chris Galley said: “We received an offer and some strong interest for Tom Nichols and we, as an organisation that believes in a collaborative approach, felt that this was an unnecessary distraction for (manager) Matthew Etherington’s first game in charge.”

A player who could be heading back to Crawley is Gills' loan keeper Glenn Morris.

Morris - on a loan deal from Crawley until January - hasn’t yet recovered from injury and Gills manager Neil Harris will be keen to strengthen the goalkeeping department next month. He’s been relying on first year scholar Taite Holtam as back-up for rookie stopper Jake Turner.

Morris has 18 months on his contract remaining at Crawley.

“He has done great for us,” said Harris. “There are a lot of ifs and buts in that one, we have been really pleased with Glenn, we like him as a goalkeeper and a character but come the start of January, as it stands, he will be Crawley’s player to go back.”

Whether a cash injection from new owner Brad Galinson means Harris has funds to buy him outright remains to be seen, or whether he looks to another loan recruit.

Harris will certainly be keen to get his business done as quickly as possible to turn the season around. Gills are currently bottom of League 2, losing 1-0 to fellow strugglers Colchester United on Boxing Day.

“The ideal scenario is we get business done as early as possible,” Harris said. “Certainly before Hartlepool on January 14, the latest we want to leave it.

“Of course, during the course of January things change, people decide they want to leave, options change within the building, injuries, suspensions, always an open mind but if possible, business done early.

“We need to adjust because we have not been good enough and that is not a slight on an individual, a slight on the collective yes and I take responsibility in that, but ultimately we are bottom of the Football League and that is not acceptable. I can’t name many teams in the league that have been better than us this year, we know why we are bottom of the league.”

With just six goals scored in 21 league games and none in the last seven, he’ll be determined to make changes up top, adding creativity and goals to the squad as soon as he can.
