Gillingham’s fringe players are being given every chance to impress, says boss Justin Edinburgh.

The new manager has been reluctant to change a winning team since taking over but he’s not ruled anyone out.

He said: “I told the players when I met them before the Sheffield United game that they will all be given an equal opportunity.

“It would be difficult for anyone to break into this team at the minute because the results and the performances have been excellent.

“People can’t be disheartened though because if and when someone comes in, they will be coming into a team that are playing well. As a former player myself, I know that is always easier than one that is struggling.

“People have to be patient and they have to work hard in training.”

The Gills boss spent Monday training solely with those players who didn’t feature at the weekend.

He also watched his fringe players in action against Brighton in the development league last week and there is another reserve match against Peterborough on Wednesday.

“People have got an opportunity of showing me what they are capable of doing,” he said.

“I said to the players, the most important ones are those who are not in the team, because we have to keep them interested, fit and feeling like they are important, which they are. That is my job.”

*Former Charlton forward Danny Haynes is no longer training with the Gills.

He featured for Scunthorpe United’s reserve team at Gateshead on Monday.

Haynes, 27, has been searching for a club since being released by Notts County in December and spent several weeks with the Gills.
