Boss Ady Pennock was a relieved man after Cody McDonald’s late show bagged three points for Gillingham.

McDonald scored in the 90 and 96 minute to clinch a 3-1 win for the Gills over Bristol Rovers.

“It was a big relief,” said Pennock, who celebrated the third goal with McDonald infront of the Rainham End.

“We haven’t deserved to lose games. We have conceded late goals to lose games and drawn, we haven’t had much luck, we didn’t have much luck (against Bristol Rovers) but we made our own goals through hard work and team spirit.”

Pennock said: “Our heads could have gone down after conceding the penalty but we didn’t and it showed what good players we have here I am very pleased.

“The points are huge.

“We scored three and others (in the relegation fight) conceded and so the goal difference is a bit better.

“Bury lost on Thursday night and that was a bonus for us. People say ‘you shouldn’t look at other results’. Too right we should, of course we do, we are human beings.

“It was a big result for us, results went our way Friday, but the most important thing was us.

“Everyone had to turn up and even the subs had to go on and do a job and they did. We can’t carry anyone. There is a togetherness at the club and the lads fully deserved it.”
