Goalkeeper Glenn Morris’ loan deal at Gillingham ended on Monday after he made a surprise return to the starting eleven.

Manager Neil Harris said after the game he wasn’t sure what the future situation was with the keeper, who had been on a half-season loan from Crawley Town.

Morris joined the Gills in the summer - after Charlton loanee Ashley Maynard-Brewer picked up an injury - with Crawley’s then boss Kevin Betsy happy for him to go and get action elsewhere. Since then the West Sussex side have had several different men in charge.

Betsy was sacked in October, replaced by Lewis Young on an interim basis. Matthew Etherington was given the job permanently but lasted just 32 days. Former Gills striker Darren Byfield is the new caretaker boss, with co-owner Preston Johnson helping out.

It’s a situation that can’t have made it easy to get any clarity on the club’s position of their goalkeeper. The Gills have just signed their star striker Tom Nichols.

Morris was enjoying his loan spell with the Gills before injury left him sidelined in mid-November. He returned to the side at Stevenage as Jake Turner returned to the bench.

“I don’t know what is going to be happening, whether he will be staying or not, I need to find out,” said Harris.

Turner had stepped up to play as the club’s no.1 with youth player Taite Holtam as cover.

Morris has another 18 months on his deal at Crawley and the Gills could offer him a permanent deal. If he doesn't return then Harris will be in the market for another goalie.
