Goalkeeper Jamie Cumming said he was targeted by fans throwing coins as Gillingham claimed a midweek win at Cambridge.

The on-loan Chelsea goalkeeper ended the game with a booking after turning to celebrate the win infront of those fans who had been giving him grief in the second half at the Abbey Stadium.

Cumming kept a clean sheet and made some top saves infront of the home end, none better than the finger-tip block that denied Sam Smith with the Gills leading 1-0.

Gillingham went onto grab a second and claim all three points.

Reacting to the win, Cumming tweeted: “Proper performance tonight!

“To the Cambridge fans throwing coins and whatever else, I hope you enjoyed your evening.”

He added his thanks also to the Gills fans as well, who he described as “class.”

Cumming has certainly made a good impression since joining the Gills.

He produced a string of top saves in the 1-1 draw with Charlton.

After the 1-1 draw with Oxford at the weekend, where he again made an important contribution, boss Steve Evans admitted the young goalkeeper’s handling was “a little untidy at times.”

But he also had plenty of good things to say and praised goalkeeper coach Ian Pledger for his work on the 22-year-old shot-stopper.

Evans, speaking after that Oxford game, said: “It is not just the blocks but it is the reaction. Ian Pledger deserves enormous credit because he works with him every day. We identified that he makes a save but you then need to make the second save and bounce. Ian has worked very hard on that but to be fair, the person who is producing it is Jamie.”
