Gillingham are up against it this Saturday as they look to get their survival bid back on track.

A stoppage-time defeat at Sunderland last Saturday coupled with back to back wins for their relegation rivals Morecambe has seen the Gills drop back into the relegation zone.

Morecambe leapfrogged the Gills on Tuesday night. Next up for Neil Harris’ men is a home game against play-off chasing Wycombe Wanderers.

The Gills lost 1-0 to Sunderland in the 95th minute last weekend and face another team chasing promotion this Saturday. Wycombe head to Priestfield six unbeaten and on the back of a 4-1 win at Cambridge United, a result that lifted the side back into the play-off places.

Harris, looking ahead to their next challenge, said: “Wycombe are a good side, an experienced team, they have some excellent players with Championship experience. Because of the experience they have got, they are not a small club anymore, they have had experience in the Championship and by right they deserve to be in the top 10 of this division with the likes of Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday and the size of clubs like Oxford and Rotherham.

“We know it will be another stern test, they have got real physical ability about them but they have can play as well, very good on the transitions, we have to make sure we cover all aspects of the game including set-plays. We need to try and improve small elements of our game on our previous 13.”

While the Gills have continued to struggle for goals - as they did before Harris’ appointment - they come up against a side who have only conceded twice in their current seven-game unbeaten run, winning five of those.

Gillingham will be looking to bounce back from that 95th minute defeat against Sunderland.

“That has gone and we move onto the next one,” said the Gills boss.

“The players are good, they are in a really good place and we’ll be looking to get a couple of players back fitter this weekend, a boost to the group, mentally and physically.”

Gillingham have five games left this season. They have improved their results under Harris and he said: “We can’t control what happens with results elsewhere.

“We have to take care of our own business and we have done extremely well with that mentality and focus so far. I know that come 5pm on Saturday we will be in a lot healthier place with four games to go than when I first took over with 18 to go.”

Wycombe are likely to include former Gills strikers Brandon Hanlan and Adebayo Akinfenwa in their squad this weekend.

Akinfenwa is set to retire at the end of the season and the big striker, who made 77 league appearances for the Gills over two spells between 2010 and 2014 was honoured with a day of celebrations at Wycombe last weekend.

Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth said: "When we signed him it was billed as a publicity stunt. 'What are Wycombe doing, surely that guy's finished?' (people said). But he's gone on to become our greatest ever EFL goalscorer."
