Boss Steve Lovell felt Gillingham were worthy of their point against Peterborough even if they did leave it late to claim it.

Max Ehmer was the man to grab the crucial goal, scoring in stoppage-time to level it up at 1-1.

“I think we deserved the point,” said the manager.

“I don’t think they were the better side, they might have had more possession than us but they never really threatened our goal, only with a few long shots.”

Gillingham went for broke, trailing 1-0 to Danny Lloyd’s 67 minute goal, but it was defender Ehmer who came up with the goods, not one of the three strikers playing upfront at the time.

Lovell said: “I would like to take credit for chucking him upfront but he made his own way up there.

“He nearly scored just before that, sliding in.

“Max always fancies himself as a goalscorer in training and he took it well when he went through.

“I was pleased that we got a point, a draw was a fair result.”

Lovell’s men looked better in the closing stages, once they had gone a goal down.

The manager said: “We got men forward throughout the game, it was just that we huffed and puffed, maybe because of the conditions, but with the ball we gave it away too often, went too long at times, where we hadn’t been.

“In the last 20 minutes when we started pass the ball into people’s feet, we started to create a few chances but credit to the opposition, they closed us down and stopped us from playing, it was a very good point.”

Ehmer’s goal ensured the Gills weren’t finishing the day tasting back-to-back defeats. They lost to league leaders Wigan last weekend.

“When you lose a game, you don’t want to lose two,” said Lovell, who hasn’t lost successive league games since taking charge.

“We haven’t, we have gained a point, we haven’t lost two. That could be a massive point for us. We want to get to 50 points as quick as we can and that is another point closer to our target.”
