Gills boss Steve Lovell had mixed emotions after Saturday’s win over Rochdale.

While he was delighted with the three points he also acknowledged improvements have to be made.

He said: "It was good to get the three points but it was the first time after a game that I have felt disappointed, but that shows what we are aiming for.

“It was not good enough and we all know it wasn’t good enough. We will work hard to improve it.

“I thought we started very brightly second half, got Marts’ goal to take the lead and after that it becomes a mental thing, thinking ‘right, we are 2-1 up, at home, we haven’t won too many at home, let’s hang onto it.’

"I am so happy with the result but perhaps the way the last 15-20 minutes wasn’t one I would like to have every week.

“It is alright winning but as coaching staff we have to look at how we are going to improve and move forward. It was a great result and you could come off and think ‘oh yes, great result, we did this and that’.

“Some parts of it were good but I think the mental side of it at the end caused us to drop deeper and deeper and it is something we have to address because on another day you could play like that and end up losing the game.

Despite sitting back, the Gills managed to hang onto their 2-1 lead.

“They never give up,” said the manager.

“It is nice to get a gutsy comeback, they worked hard. It is nice that we won but I’m a little disappointed with the second half.

"That is something we have to work out as a coaching group, we have got to sort it out and make sure we have the remedy to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
