Captain Shaun Williams was delighted to see another of his old Millwall teammates join the Gills.

Williams had previously aided Scott Malone’s journey to the Gills and had been encouraging wide-man Connor Mahoney to come down to Priestfield too.

Mahoney became the latest former Millwall man to sign on at ME7 following a loan move from Huddersfield Town. He had previously worked under Gills boss Neil Harris at The Den and said on his arrival that it was “time to get back smiling and playing football.”

Having former team-mates like Williams in the dressing room will help.

“He’s a great addition to the squad,” said the Gills skipper, after playing alongside him again at the weekend.

“I have been chasing him to come, luckily enough we got it over the line.

“He has got that quality end product in the final third, he has played a higher level than we’re at now and hopefully he’ll bring that to the table.

“He is also a nice guy, a good professional and has definitely settled in well.”

Asked about his persuasive influence in both deals, Williams said: “I am a team player so I’ll do whatever I can.”

And he believes the newcomer will find it easy to settle.

He said: “With the group that we have, there are no cliques, it is an easy group to settle into.

“There is a good core, everyone gets on and hopefully, we can do the business.

“There are a lot of good players here, competition for each spot in the team, there is a good bond in the group and we’ll be pushing each other all the way.”

There was a setback on Saturday as Gillingham’s winning run came to an end, losing 3-0 at home to Colchester United.

On that defeat, Williams said: “We’re disappointed. We didn’t think we gave a good account of ourselves and we’ll be looking to bounce back.

“The first goal is such a big goal in any game, they sat off us first half, played counter-attack and took their chance, albeit by a couple of errors here or there. It’s a learning curve but we move on.

“If you were to say we would have 12 points from a possible 15 at the start of the season I would snap your hand off.”

It’s Luton Town up next for the Gills in the Carabao Cup, on Tuesday night.

Williams sat out the previous round when Harris’ men overcame Championship Southampton with a thrilling 3-1 win.

He said: “Come Monday, everyone will be focused on that, another great opportunity for everyone to test themselves against a Premier League team.

“It is a nice distraction and a good test for ourselves against Premier League players.

“(The Southampton game) was brilliant, a great performance and result for ourselves, against a team that are probably favourites for the Championship.

“I didn’t play myself. It was brilliant to watch and devastating not to be involved in it. I am not a person for personal accolades and if the team is doing well that’s good enough for me.”
