Gillingham boss Steve Lovell is still focusing on survival in League 1

Danger still lurks for Gillingham, says boss Steve Lovell.

The Gills climbed further from the relegation scrap with a memorable 2-1 win at Charlton on New Year’s Day.

It leaves them 15th in League 1 but despite the turnaround under Lovell, the manager knows there is still much more to do.

He said: “Every club looks towards 50-51 points to be safe and that will be our first incentive.

“There is a long way to go. You can have a couple of defeats in the next two or three and be back in it again.

“We have to focus on the games as they come and hopefully against Rochdale (next up on January 13) we will get three points rather than one.

“It is important we keep the momentum going. We are on a bit of a run now and haven’t lost too many in the league recently.”

Lovell has taken the side from second bottom to 15th in less than three months, losing just two of his 14 league games in charge.

The players now have a weekend off, as Saturday’s scheduled opponents, Shrewsbury, are in FA Cup action. Rochdale, the team now sitting second from bottom, will be the visitors to Priestfield when they return.

Lovell said: “The boys can have a couple of days off to recuperate and we will get ready for the Rochdale game.

“We’ve had a good Christmas, a good few points and we’ve gained one at home and three away. If that carries on I won’t be too sad
about it.”
