Gillingham have confirmed the appointment of a new first-team head coach.

Stephen Clemence, 45, is the man chosen to take charge of the Gills after spending the last 12 years as a coach in the Premier League and Championship.

Clemence recently expressed his desire to manage in his own right and after discussions over roles elsewhere, has agreed to be the new man for the Gills.

He takes over from Keith Millen, who had been in charge on an interim basis following the dismissal of manager Neil Harris and his assistant David Livermore.

Millen is expected to return to his role as an overseer of coaching at the Gills and working with the B Team and academy.

The Gills have also confirmed the appointment of Robbie Stockdale as Clemence’s no.2.

His assistant was previously manager at Rochdale and since then had been first team coach at Hull and assistant head coach at MK Dons.

Clemence has previously been assistant boss to Steve Bruce at Hull, Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle and West Brom.

The new coach will take the team for training on Thursday ahead of Gillingham’s FA Cup match at non-league Hereford this Saturday.
