Gillingham assistant manager Paul Raynor was staggered with the amount of chances they missed in the second half against Burton.

The Gills no.2 felt the visitors were let off the hook after missing some easy opportunities to get back into the match.

“The level of chances we missed in the second period was frightening,” he said.

“There were some good chances, easy chances, but if you don’t put the ball in the back of the net then you are never going to win any points.

“But we shouldn’t have been leaving Burton with anything to hang onto, we shouldn’t have conceded from a basic set-piece in the first half to give them something to hang onto.

“It was a poor first half. We never really got hold of the ball but we changed the system and once we were on the front foot we created opportunities and we just didn’t take them.”

It was a similar pattern at Plymouth the week before, a dominant second half coming after a not-so-good first 45. The Gills lost both games 1-0.

Raynor said: “It was a good last 30 minutes but a very disappointing first 45. We tried to change the system, get a few more bodies in the box in the second period but disappointing really.

“You are not going to win many three points if you only play for 30 minutes of games.

“We had a 45 minute performance last week at Plymouth and we need to start putting in 90 minute performances. If we do that and play with that level of performance like we did in the last 45 at Plymouth or last 30 here and then convert it into goals then we will win football matches, we can’t just play in fits and starts.”
