Manager Neil Harris is working hard on his front two and has been pleased with their progress.
The Gillingham boss has partnered young QPR loan striker Charlie Kelman with big forward Vadaine Oliver in the last three games and was delighted with how they competed against Sheffield Wednesday.
No goals were scored against Wednesday but there wasn’t a shortage of chances.
Commenting on their weekend performance, Harris said: “I thought my front two were excellent, they were a handful. You are playing against three centre-halves and my two centre-forwards were better than their three players, both should have scored, could have scored, but I set high standards and I am delighted they got chances.”
Reflecting on the work they’ve done with the pair, Harris said: “We have worked on it, it is not just work on the training pitch, it is work in the lecture theatre, going through clips with them and showing them game scenarios and having some really good chats with them.
“My experience as a centre-forward helps to get those messages across because they know I have played in that position.
“They are really good lads and the partnership has been really strong, with and without the ball over the last three games. We have seen Charlie really come into some form, and V has been a talisman for the last couple of seasons for the club and he continues to be so. V was excellent at the weekend.
“What fans don’t always see is the work off the ball, which is so vital for us at the moment, where we are short of goals but we know we have to keep it tight.
“It is important for us to be disciplined and hard working and our pressing from the front the other day was excellent and really set the tempo for the group.”
