Gills approach away days full of confidence

Barry Fuller setting sights on automatic promotion

Notts County v Gillingham

Gillingham play the first of three consecutive away games on Tuesday night with captain Barry Fuller saying automatic promotion is the club's aim.

Mark Stimson's men take on Notts County on the back of a seven-game unbeaten run and Fuller knows how important it is to keep the momentum going.

He said: “The fans are behind us and they know how well we are doing. You can see anyone in the top seven or eight can still get automatic promotion and that’s our aim.”

After taking on Notts County, Gillingham play Grimsby on Saturday, before facing leaders Brentford the following weekend.

“Some would say that going to Notts County and Grimsby could be harder than going to Brentford.

“They are scrapping for points, especially Grimsby, and they are going to be fighting for their lives. If we can pick up points there and go to Brentford with a bit of confidence then we can go there and take three points off them which would help us.”

County are 16th in the League 2 table and although they appear to have nothing to play for, manager Stimson disagrees.

“They have pride to play for and at home you don’t want to lose,” he said.

“They’ve got an ex-striker of ours (Delroy Facey) who scored a fantastic goal against us last time so maybe he’ll have a point to prove as well.

“We have to go there and play as well as we can. It’s a big pitch and they have a couple of wingers who on their day can cause you problems. I just hope they don’t have a good day and we do.”

Gillingham were due to give late fitness tests to Simon King and Andy Barcham.
