Justin Edinburgh paid special praise to the Gills fans who backed his team so vociferously at Millwall.

He’s know hoping for the same performance again, on and off the field, as the Gills prepare for a game at their historic rivals Swindon Town.

Gills boss Edinburgh said: “Not long after people were coming off the pitch on Saturday they were saying ‘we have to do the same to Swindon now’.

“We had a fantastic result there last year and I know what that meant to the fans that travelled in their numbers.

“I want to say a special mention to the fans. They were absolutely amazing last Saturday.

“It is a noisy old place The Den but I don’t think they were out-sung for any minute of the game. They were fantastic and that showed in the players’ performance, it goes hand in hand, they mirror each other.

“We look to have the same again at Swindon.”

Their Boxing Day opponents have won their last four and Edinburgh knows under Martin Ling they are much improved.

“We are probably going to the inform team,” said the Gills boss.

“I know Martin Ling well, I played with him and it is great to see him back in the game after his reported illness, which has been well documented.

“I am glad he is back in and he is having a big impact there.

“We are going to the inform team but our last two away performances have been excellent. We are looking to have some more of that.”

Edinburgh will be looking for his team to get into Swindon from the off, as his players did at Millwall.

“The atmosphere played a part last Saturday,” he said.

“They are the games you want to play in, they are electric and the atmosphere was great.

“There were some feisty incidents but nothing untowards I don’t think. It was well competed. There were a couple of incidents which were unsavoury and I would rather not talk about, but we as a group we want to start fast and play off the front foot.

“We are a pressing side and we certainly did that at Millwall. We will have to do the same at Swindon because they are a good team with the ball and we don’t want to let them get into their stride.”
