Justin Edinburgh has hailed the “phenomenal” support Gillingham have received on their travels this season.

Gills fans are expected to travel to Scunthorpe in good numbers to watch their team’s final away game of the campaign on Saturday.

It’s a 400-mile round-trip but the long hauls from Medway haven’t put supporters off so far.

Gills boss Edinburgh said: “They’ve been fantastic. They were amazing numbers that we took for every trip – and some of the trips they have to do in midweek are baffling, when you think of the clubs in and around the area we could play.

“The away support has been phenomenal, as has the home support.

“We had a little bit of a hiccup at home but we’re starting to get that back on track now.

We’ve enjoyed our travels this year and want to finish that on a high.”

Gills have taken an average of 404 supporters to away games this season, with their biggest travelling contingent almost trebling that.

An impressive 1,191 fans roared on Edinburgh’s side at Leyton Orient on Easter Monday and they were treated to a six-goal thriller as the match finished 3-3.
