Gillingham manager Mark Bonner insisted it was all about the result after what he described as "the most brutal week".

The Gills, depleted by injuries, made it back-to-back League 2 wins thanks to substitute George Lapslie at Morecambe on Saturday.

On the back of a midweek trip to Swansea and an eight-hour trip to the north west on Friday, Bonner was delighted to pick up another three league points.

"(The performance) doesn't matter, we're absolutely buzzing with the result," stated the Gills boss. "This has been the most brutal week we could have had.

"To go to Swansea on Tuesday night, be a bit depleted and not have the options we might have, eight and a quarter hours to get here yesterday and then to win a game late on with a set play is just the best result in football.

"There can be loads of dissection of the performance but that's for Monday when we meet, it's not for today. Today is for a bit of music on the way home and fish and chips, we're buzzing with the start we've made."

Clear-cut chances were hard for both teams to come by but there was clearly a method to Gillingham's plan and a resilience and togetherness that is plain to see.

"We rode our luck in a few moments where we suffered a little bit at times in the game," conceded Bonner.

"But in the main, we were fairly comfortable despite not being quality in lots of moments. In the second half, I thought we got better, we carried a bit more of a threat.

"The wind going in that direction meant whoever was going that way tended to dominate a bit more of the game. We were a bit too open for counter attacks and stuff in the first half - more off our own play than theirs but they set them up really well.

"Once again, it was a brilliant impact from the boys that came off the bench, we had to change the dimension of the game a little bit. We felt we needed a bit more physicality and legs up the pitch.

"The bit of play that led to the goal, Remeao Hutton did brilliantly to keep it in play on the corner, Shad Ogie excellent bit of play to pin, Jayden Clarke left-foot guides it back across and George Lapslie is in a brilliant position to sniff something out.

Report: Morecambe 0-1 Gillingham

"It's a brilliant goal and then a nervy finish as you'd expect when they really pump it on you but I thought we saw that out great. It's a wonderful result."

Gillingham are one of three teams to have won their first two league games, alongside Walsall and newly-promoted Bromley.
