Captain Lee Martin will be pushing for a return to action this week.

The Gills midfielder missed the weekend clash against Peterborough with a calf strain.

Boss Steve Lovell didn’t want to risk him on Saturday but might choose to bring him back for the trip to Northampton on Tuesday night.

Lovell said: “He could have played (Saturday) after training Friday but the way the pitch was, it wouldn’t have done him any good.

“I am glad we didn’t start him because it might have put him out for a few weeks. Hopefully with another two or three days of rest and treatment he should be okay for Tuesday.”

Northampton sit three points above the drop zone in League 1 but enjoyed a 3-1 win at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

The Cobblers are one of only three teams to have inflicted a league defeat on the Gills since Lovell took charge. It was Lovell’s first loss as manager and he felt the result that day was harsh.

“It wasn’t our worst performance and they scored two really good goals, one from a free-kick and one from a great strike outside the box,” said Lovell.

“We controlled that game and should’ve got something but it will be different going up there, they are on a good run.”
