Gillingham’s search for a new manager is hotting up.

Chairman Paul Scally is interviewing a trio of potential candidates overseas this week.

Mr Scally is back in Dubai having conducted initial interviews in England last week.

The Gills chairman said: “Myself and our management team have met all bar three of those we selected from the CVs we received.

“Those we have yet to see being outside the UK at present.

“I believe we will be conducting second interviews within the next few days and then be able to finalise the process and make an appointment.”

Gillingham were hoping to speak to AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley but he declined the request, while Newport County manager Justin Edinburgh admitted his interest, but also looks like staying put after agreeing a new deal with the Welsh club.

The odds on former Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace striker Shefki Kuqi becoming Gillingham’s next manager tumbled after he watched Saturday’s match at Priestfield.

While Kuqi has applied, it is understood he has not been interviewed about the job.
He was thought to be joined in the stands by former Gills coach Mark Robson, who has also put his hat in the ring, while ex-England striker James Beattie is another hoping to get the job.

Since Peter Taylor was sacked on New Year’s Eve, the Gills have managed to pull clear of the relegation zone with back-to-back home wins.

Mr Scally, writing in Saturday’s programme, said: “I have been hugely impressed with the manner in which our interim team have gone about their tasks in maintaining momentum, training and preparing the team and determining the playing style which best suits the player we have.”
