John Marquis scored twice on Saturday and is relishing the opportunity to show what he can do.

The on-loan frontman is already looking forward to his next Gillingham outing after taking his goal tally to three in three.

He said: “I have never really had a run in the team. I feel I need to be playing regularly to get the best out of myself.

“I want to be playing and when this opportunity came I was really looking forward to it. To have three goals in three games is not a bad start.

“I want to keep getting into the right positions and I am working on a partnership with (fellow striker) Cody (McDonald) at the moment. He has got a lot of goals throughout his career and playing with good players can help me improve.

“The fitter and sharper I get, I know I have the ability to score goals at this level, so I am really happy to get two.

“(Myself and Cody) have a good understanding. It’s the little and large combination. Cody is a good runner with the ball, he’s very quick and can get in behind.

“I am more hold-up, back to goal and can link the play. It is a good combination, the two of us. It is working at the moment and so long may it continue.

“There are a lot of people who want to play in those positions, which is good, because it keeps everyone on their toes. I am looking forward to the next game already.”

Marquis will have to sit out Thursday’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy match because he is cup-tied, but is sure to be back to face Walsall next Sunday.

The Gills striker enjoyed his two goals on Saturday against Oldham.

“Both were left-footed which I am not really renowned for,” he said.

“But they were both nice finishes and I passed them into the net really.”

The Gills then conceded twice but won the match when Bradley Dack fired home in the second half.

“It showed a lot of character,” said the 22-year-old.

“We got the result in the end and everyone is happy and buzzing after two back-to-back wins, especially at home.

“It gives the crowd something to enjoy and they got right behind us again and the support was great.”
