Leon Legge believes he has done enough to prove he still deserves to be playing League 1 football, with or without Gillingham.

The central defender walked away with the man-of-the-match champagne on Sunday as the Gills finished their season victorious.

Legge started the last six games and will find out on Tuesday, along with a handful of others, whether he will be offered a new deal by boss Justin Edinburgh.

He said: “I have played the majority of games in League 1, this is my level and hopefully (next season) it is with Gillingham. It could be with someone else in League 1, you never know.

"I have shown the gaffer what I can do and it gives him something to think about for next season.”

Legge, 29, admits he “hasn’t got a clue” if he will be wanted by boss Justin Edinburgh,

“I will be in on Tuesday and will see what they say and see what comes of it,” said the defender.

“In football you never know who is watching and hopefully, if it's not here, it is somewhere else. I just want to play football, no matter what pitch it is and where it is at, that is all I want to do.”

If it isn’t with Gillingham, he has at least gone out on a high.

He helped keep Notts County’s big striker Balint Bajner from causing too many problems at Priestfield on Sunday.

Legge said: “I lost count the amount of times I won headers (against him)!

“He was a big lad but I think we got the better of him, not only myself, but also when he went onto Max Ehmer’s side.

“They targeted him a lot and didn’t get much joy. Their game plan went out the window.

“We kept him quiet but they scored the first goal. We hit back and got three and it was brilliant to end on a positive.”
