Central defensive duo Alex Lacey and Ben Nugent remain out injured for the Gills ahead of their weekend trip to Rotherham.

Lacey (knee) is back on the training ground but is unlikely to be fit enough to travel up to Yorkshire.

And big defender Nugent, an idea foil for Rotherham’s giant-sized leading scorer Kieffer Moore, remains several weeks away with bruising to his foot.

Gills’ caretaker boss Steve Lovell said: “Alex is down the training ground and he is running with the ball.

“I don’t like to put targets on them, because I don’t want to pressurise them or the fitness people to get them back. They’ve got to get them back when they’re ready.”

On Nugent’s injury, Lovell said he would be missing “for a good couple of weeks, at least.”

There is better news for Luke O'Neill, however, after he got through a practice match on Tuesday at the training ground.

O'Neill is expected to be back in the squad, ready to challenge Sean Clare for the right-back role.
