Gillingham midfielder Jake Hessenthaler says staying in the side is harder than getting back into the first team

Jake Hessenthaler worked hard to get back into Gillingham’s starting XI but staying there is just as tough.
The 22-year-old has started the last four league games after barely featuring at the start of the season.
Competition in the midfield area is massive and captain Josh Wright, returning from suspension, will be one of those looking to work their way back into the team.
Hessenthaler said: “I went through a frustrating time but everyone goes through it. I’ve kicked on and started a few more games and hopefully that can continue.
“It is always nice to start games and play. As a young kid that’s what you want to be doing, you dream about playing football and starting games.
“Football does change quickly and that is why when you aren’t in the team you have to keep going.
“When you are in the team you have to keep going as well because we have quite a lot of players and there is great competition.
“If you’re not playing well you will be out and someone else will be taking over.
“It is good competition. It’s good for everyone. I am enjoying my time again and have had five games on the bounce now.
“I feel I have progressed and got better and better and that is probably down to fitness levels and getting match fitness back.
“It can be hard to keep that sharpness up when you’re not playing. I feel like my performances are getting to the level where I want them to be.”
